WFH: Parenting Edition

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we work forever, bringing forth realities of working from home or leading a hybrid schedule. Our homes have become our law offices. Zoom has made it possible to speak in court without physically being in the courtroom. Not only have we had to adjust the way we work, but our children have had to face the same uncertainty surrounding school. Depending on the school, some are back to 100% in-person learning, some continue to solely learn from home, and others utilize a combination.

Sometimes, sharing a space 24/7 whilst trying to remain productive can be a challenge. Here's how you can stay on top of everything and ensure a consistent environment for everyone, no matter where you're working from.

Communication is key. While following the continued updates and our ever-changing landscape of work, communicating with both your family and employer is key. As we constantly adjust our schedules to meet the needs of our careers, clients, and families, communicating is important for everyone to maintain a consistent daily schedule. This may mean breaking away from the usual 9-5 to accommodate the needs of our children throughout the day.

Think about what is most important to you professionally and personally. It is vital to communicate with your family about your plans. Open communication is key to maintaining a work-life balance, especially in helping children to understand the changing landscape of our daily lives. By keeping the lines of communication open, you will impart upon them this valuable life skill.

Establish a routine. Routines are important for adults and children alike. Using a white board is a great way to write out and view your schedule each day to help everyone stay on track for both school and work. As the seasons change and students enter summer break, discuss the importance of updating the schedule and what times may be "off-limits" as you must focus on work or participate in meetings. Establishing a routine helps everyone to develop consistency that is best for the home.

Be flexible. Not everything goes according to plan, especially when it comes to our daily routines. While working from home and taking care of children, change is inevitable. Our schedules change day to day, especially for attorneys, and that is okay. Communicate your needs for each day with your employer and children in order to set reasonable expectations. This flexibility allows you to stay on top of parenting as well as your workload.

Lowering your standards and understanding that not everything will always align with your vision can release much of the day-to-day pressure you may feel. Always be open to change and ready to embrace it!

Create a "You" space and a "Them" space. Sometimes, in order to make the most of working hours when home, you will need to set boundaries with your family. Have a dedicated workspace in which you are not to be disturbed--and do the same for your kids! Help them create a neat, comfortable area where they can focus on classes and homework. Set a good example by giving them space when they are in their workspace. This will teach them to respect yours as well.
