7 Tips to Harness Motivation

Motivation. It's the internal drive that leads us to achieve our goals or simply get out of bed in the morning. Some days we have it, some days we don't (leading us to brew that extra pot of coffee).

Whether it's work, a big project, a side hobby, or simply good habits you wish to form, check out these tips on how to harness your motivation and progress towards your goals.

Map out your goals. Organize a timeframe that includes both long-term and short-term goals. Break them down into manageable tasks so you don't feel overwhelmed by the big picture. Set yourself reminders or create a checklist to help you stay on task. As you check things off, continue to set new goals for yourself.

Tackling a hefty project can often feel like you're standing at the base of a tall mountain, gazing up at the peak that seems miles away. Every journey starts with a step. Start climbing that mountain rock by rock and with enough hard work and patience, the peak will loom closer, and you will find yourself at the top before you know it. Progress is progress no matter how small.

Get going to gain momentum. Sometimes, the hardest part is forcing yourself to get started and you've just got to go for it. Once you get a good rhythm going, work may start to come easier and it can be hard to quit. As Sir Isaac Newton once said, "An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion."

Embrace positivity. Negative feelings such as anxiety, self-doubt, or fear of failure can kill motivation where it stands. Discard the useless negativity and focus on cultivating positive thoughts. Change "I can't do it," into "I'll try my best!"

This goes for the people around you as well. The saying "Don't let anyone drag you down," rings true so make sure to surround yourself with upbeat people who will encourage you to pursue your goals. Which is the perfect lead-in to our next point...

Have a solid support system. Everyone needs a support system--we are only human. Do not be afraid to share your goals with others and ask for help in keeping motivated. Having someone to talk to can help you stay focused and maintain those positive feelings. If you don't wish to turn to your friends or family, try looking into support groups or mentors.

Take breaks when needed. Sometimes you have to acknowledge that it's not happening and you shouldn't try to force it. You don't want to wind up with subpar results. Setbacks are a natural part of life so do not hesitate to take time off. Step away, refresh, and by the time you return to work, you will be much better off.

Treat yourself. Celebrate your progress! Every time you complete a step or achieve a goal, reward yourself with something nice. Over time, you will condition your brain into associating hard work with reward and turn motivation into your new routine!

Reflect. Yes, you should always be looking ahead and mapping out new goals. But every so often, pause and look behind you at the trail you've blazed up the mountain. Reflect on how far you've come and what you've learned along the way. This is a great way to build confidence, keep the wheels turning, and foster more motivation!

Remember: You got this!
